Landen's Tech Overview

So we've decided to each make a list of the different devices we use. This is something I've wanted to do for a while. I really enjoy talking and writing about tech. But I especially enjoy talking about the tech I use.

Tech devices for me are a very personal thing. Whenever someone asks my opinion on a new phone or computer or other tech device they should get, I always ask what the main thing they want from that product and how they are going to use it. I rarely recommend just one device and one platform. So when I get to talk about the devices I use, there are quite a few reasons as to why I use what I use.

So let's get to it.

Phone - 32 GB, Quite Black Pixel XL from Google. I've been an Android guy for years. Even before I had a smartphone I was drawn to the platform. I have nothing against the iPhone. I really like what Apple has done with their devices and prefer them in some cases. But for certain reasons I've just always had a preference for what Google has put together. Also I'm very deep into the Google ecosystem and using Android definitely makes it easier.

I chose the 32 GB model for a couple of reasons. I've never had space issues on any phone I've used. And I currently have 178 apps installed on my phone. The biggest helper? Google Photos. You get unlimited cloud storage for all of your photos and videos. And with the Pixel phones, those are full resolution photos and videos. And money p layed a big part also. I bought the $99 protection plan along with the phone. That made an already expensive phone that much more expensive. I didn't want to add another $100 to double the storage when I knew I would be fine without it. And I haven't had any problems yet.

Computer - Currently in the market for one. At least for my own personal device. Right now I use my wife's computer which is a HP Pavilion 15 with an Intel Core i7 processor, 6 GB RAM, 675 HDD running Windows 10. If I had my way and a lot more money I would definitely have a brand new MacBook Pro. Unfortunately that is not the case at the moment.

I've been using Apple computers for quite a while and definitely like macOS more than Window's. Although, Window's 10 is my favorite version of Window's and has, for the first time, made me seriously consider getting a Window's computer. And my choice there would be a Surface Pro. But again, I'm not rich.

Smartwatch - 1st Generation Moto 360. This is one of my favorite devices I own. The thing I like the most about having a smartwatch is being able to check and dismiss notifications without having to grab my phone. I like being able to just glance at my wrist to see why my phone is making noise and/or vibrating. And being able to customize the watch face is pretty cool.

Tablet - 1st Generation 16 GB iPad Mini. My tablet of choice has always been an iPad. I have yet to find an Android tablet that I like. Also Android hasn't really optimized well for that type of device. What Apple has done with iOS for a tablet is mostly quite nice. I wish this device had split screen mode like the newer, larger models. And at the time I bought this, the screen size was ideal for what I wanted in a tablet.

TV - TCL 55US57 4K Roku TV. I had never had any experience with Roku devices before this TV. I had a smart TV before this one that used Yahoo's version of smart TV features. It worked. But only just. And it hadn't received an update for at least 2 years. This has been a very nice upgrade. Not only in size (32" to 55") and resolution (1080p to 4K) but smart features and functionality. The one device I would compare it to is the Apple TV. Apps are the main thing here. And it's very handy. I do still have a 1st Gen Chromecast plugged in as well. Although with this TV, I only use it for a few things now.
